Top 20 critical points to consider when buying a public facing kiosk

September 2010

Before you start any kiosk project it's vital that you know that your prospective supplier has the proven capability to deliver a successful roll out.

We're going to share with you the Top 20 critical questions that you should ask and also tell you our response.

Here's a preview of the first 5 questions and answers:

Q1. Is the unit DDA compliant?

A1. Yes. Our kiosks meet the requirement by the Disability Discrimination Act for people with a disability – especially with reference to a wheel chair. The kiosk’s screen height and angle are optimised for viewing by all users - they are orientated so that overhead lights do not affect the image quality through reflection and use SAW touch technology which gives the highest light transparency and clarity of image for the user.

The screens are also positioned 125cm from the floor to the centre of the screen so that they can be easily reached (conforms to ADA guidelines in the absence of DDA rules). In addition, Stainless steel bars aid users with poor motor control and act as a good hand rail for stability.

Q2. Are you ISO9000 and ISO14001 accredited?

A2. Yes. We are ISO 9001and ISO 14001 certified and each department satisfies the guidelines set by the ISO’s standard of Quality management and Environmental systems. We work within these guidelines at all times and take our environmental commitment very seriously. The steel we use is recyclable and all off-cuts are recycled. The units are also manufactured in the UK reducing our carbon footprint.

Q3.Do you have CE and EMC certification for the kiosk(not just ‘self-certification’)?

A3. Yes. Our kiosks have been fully tested and received CE approval. This is critical as the units are to be used by the public (in the case of electrocution – you would be liable if this not obtained!)

CE certification obtained from the individual manufacturers of the components alone does not cover the whole unit.  All our units have an EMC certificate (08J051CR) for electrical compliance – this is from an approved UK centre.

Q4. How long have you been making kiosks and do you have documented versions of the model in question?

A4. We have manufactured kiosks for 10 years – we are on our 9th version of the Xen range of kiosks. This product evolution is born out of many incremental changes that have resulted in a kiosk with proven quality.

You do not want to buy a prototype. If you do buy an untested design, unforeseen problems will normally present themselves within a short period of time. Our units are ‘off the shelf’ – but with branding and component selection they look personal to your brand.

Q5. Do you offer a complete kiosk solution, end to end, including a robust software platform and service?

A5. Yes - we supply hardware and our in-house Gorilla Media® software which provides a platform for secure kiosk network management, reporting and remote monitoring. We also offer maintenance and service agreements for your entire estate.

Gorilla Media® has been tested and approved by BT for use on the OpenZone network, in addition a number of major corporations including national operations with Virgin Gyms and Thistle Hotels and several major banks all relay on system protection provided by GorillaMedia®.

The software runs on a traffic light system and can automatically send an SMS to an engineer for a site visit if required. You can see all your kiosks at a glance and pull off any usage reports that you require.
