American University Installs Calories Counting Touchscreen Kiosks

09/01/2012

A university in America has installed two touchscreen kiosks in its campus dining halls to offer nutritional information for its students.

The University of Maryland, in the United States, has deployed some information kiosks that count calories in meals for the health-conscious.

Dining Services has installed one unit in the South Campus dining hall and one in the North Campus diner and both feature online calorie counters; as well as sodium content and overall nutritional value of each food items. The kiosks breakdown the food information including fat and salt content.

Students reportedly started requesting more nutritional info several years ago but it is only now that the University has provided the touch screen technology to offer more accessible and through health facts.

Dining Services spokesman, Bart Hipple, said: “People really have been wanting and have been in need of something on the spot that they can use to get the nutritional value of their lunch while they're in the dining hall.”

Students could previously only gain nutrition facts through the dining website so it is hoped that the newly deployed kiosks will benefit students’ health and encourage them to make healthier choices, as they will now have all the necessary information they need to make an informed decision about their meals.

Colleen Wright-Riva, Dining Services Director, added: “I think they're going to be a nice addition to the dining halls. This gives students the opportunity to get a closer look at nutritional facts without holding up service.”
